FIRST SLC CYCLE STYLE SHOW FEATURES EXCITING NEW BIKE TRENDS

Salt Lake Organizers Pattern European Style Shows to WOW Audience

Salt Lake City April 30, 2009 – Salt Lake City is finding out that the new black is GREEN, because riding bicycles is where it’s at!  May is National and Utah Bike Month and Salt Lake’s Bike Bonanza will debut an all new Cycle Style Show as part of the festivities.  The public is invited to join cycle advocates and leaders for this free family event that has been patterned after European cycle style shows on Friday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake.  Former Mayor Ted Wilson will call in the styles while Mayor Ralph Becker of Salt Lake City, and many others show Salt Lake how to be in bike style.

“We are really excited about how this event is coming together and what it means to biking in Salt Lake,” said show organizer and bike advocate Tara McKee.  “After researching how others around the world build momentum for biking in their areas, I found that the European cycling shows bring communities together in an exciting way.  As the planning of this event has unfolded, I have become keenly aware of the love of biking in Salt Lake.  Whether people enjoy road, mountain, or leisure biking, I have found that we all yearn for a community that understands the benefits for individuals and families.   This event will center on our love of the sport.”

The Cycle Style Show will feature bicycles of all types for the 2009 season including road, mountain trail, commute to work, and bike path.  Avid cyclist we will be shown the latest gear, clothing and bikes.  New hybrids and cruisers will be on show for those want to take a leisurely ride in their neighborhood or park.  A touch of Amsterdam will be added to the line-up with some Dutch-style bicycles that allow a rider to look stylish and chic because these bikes have chain guards and skirt guards to help keep clothes clean.  There will even be a few unusual bikes for those who want to stand out.

“Utah” and “Fashion” have never necessarily gone together, so adding “Bicycle” probably won’t give you much more of a mental picture. But urban bike riding of all kinds and even the concept of bike commuting is alive and well in the Beehive state, and next week in Salt Lake City a bike fashion show is aiming to highlight both the best of city bikes and fashion trends for riding. Babes on bikes and even biking in high heels are part of the spectacle after the jump.

Bike Month, Bike Bonanza, Bike Babes
In Utah, May is Bike Month, and this year for the first time organizers have put together a Bike Fashion Show to complement the annual Bike Bonanza. The show will display both the latest fashions in the bikes themselves, as well as apparel. While in many cases this still means an overdose of spandex, the trend of city riding - i.e. dressing in your normal work or casual clothes when you get on your bike, a la Copenhagen Cycle Chic - has reached Utah’s cultural consciousness. And that’s great - importing Europe’s approach to biking to the U.S. would have lots of benefits.

    Bike Fashion Booming Big
If it’s happening in Utah you can be fairly sure it’s happening elsewhere. In London, for example, five (yep, five) different boutiques, including a mainstream Top Shop, are peddling bike fashion specifically to women. Bike bags predominate, but there’s also a focus on casual fashion that can go from bike to boardroom.
